History of The Bar

The Silver Dollar Bar has been part of Missoula’s character since 1935, when the Martello family opened it along the old Railroad Street corridor. Born in the final years of the Depression, it quickly became a dependable stop for rail workers, loggers, and neighborhood regulars who shaped the Westside’s early identity.

As Missoula grew and the industrial district changed, the Silver Dollar stayed in the same family hands, passing from one generation of Martellos to the next. Each era added its own layer — from the post‑war years to the city’s modern revival — but the bar’s spirit never drifted far from its roots: straightforward drinks, familiar faces, and a sense of place that doesn’t need reinvention.

Today, the Silver Dollar Bar remains family‑operated at 307 West Railroad Street, one of the last long‑running neighborhood bars in the area. After nine decades, it continues to thrive by doing what it has always done best: offering Missoulians a warm, unpretentious spot to gather, talk, and keep a piece of the city’s history alive.
